Kunkel is a German name very popular in the Spessart mountains East of Frankfurt. The Kunkel is an old name for a certain part of a spinning wheel. Spinning wheel work was seen as rather female, therefore the Kunkel gave name to the 'Kunkellehen'. 'Kunkellehen' meant that land was inherited along the maternal line. If this happened the offsprings of the family were called 'Kunkel'.
