Banerjis were originally called 'Bandyopadhyaya'. During the British rule in India, as the Englishmen could not pronounce the name they coined the name Banerji, which has stuck. They came from the Kannauj area of what is now Uttar Pradesh in India. They are thus originally "Kannaujia Brahmins", i.e. the priestly class. The name Bandyopadhyaya means 'Bandya' i.e. 'respected' + 'Upadhyaya' i.e. teacher. Bandyopadhyayas, Mukhopahyayas, Chattopadhyayas, Gangopadhyayas were all teachers who migrated ages ago from Kannauj in Uttar Pradesh to what is now Bengal in India, and worked as teachers of various kings and princes and their families.
