The origin of the name Giffing is uncertain. It variously appears in old records as Giefing/Kiefing/Kieffing/Gieffingh usw. Many Giffings were Lutherans who fled to the Burgenland area of Austria/Hungary (from Germany) in the 17th century during times of religious persecution. The name in its variations still occurs in Burgenland and western Hungary today, but many Giffings also emmigrated from there to the United States in the 18-19th centuries. There are also minor apparently unrelated occurrences of a name Giffing in England. On the one hand the name has the appearance of a typical Swabian/Bavarian "ing" place name, although no such location can be identified in Germany today. But there apparently was also a monastery/abbey named Giffing in western Hungary which was dissolved in the 17th or 18th century. Old references suggest the records of that establishment were transferred to the St Martinsberg Abbey (Panonhalma)following the dissolution, where they might still be found today. The mystery continues!
