The person who explained the meaning of the name Taferner to me, was my Latin professor at the AMS in Linz, Austria. The original version of the name goes back to the Romans, it was then spelled Taberna and meat inn or innkeeper. Taferner and Taverner are both German derivatieves of the original Taberna, with Taverner being the older version and Taferner the later version. The oldest known document with the name Taferner was issued to someone called Heinrich Taferner sometime around 1280 AD for exceptional services in long distance transport, and was issued in what now is Stuttgat, Germany. I am South African and according to the national register was the only Taferner in South Africa, till I got married and had children. Norbert.Taferner@gmail.com
