'Illgner' - is derived from the old German name for the wild Iris, the Ilge-lilien, with the suffix '-ner' to indicate 'person'. When the north German - Pommeranian - Polish region of Europe began to be used for agriculture in the 12th - 14th centuries, the sandy and waterlogged country had to be cleared and drained, and the free peasant farmers who pioneered this often came to name themselves for features of this environment. So many north German surnames have water connotations eg Bruchner, Brockmann, Bach, Teichmann, Fiehnemann; and the Iris/Ilge was a common flower in the marshes. Family tradition says that the 'Illgner' double 'LL' was introduced during the Reformation by the protestant families, to differentiate themselves from the Catholic families who retained the original 'Ilgner' spelling.
