Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (* in Leipzig; † 14. November in Hannover) war ein deutscher Philosoph, Wissenschaftler, Mathematiker, Diplomat, Physiker, Historiker, Politiker, Bibliothekar und Doktor des weltlichen und des Kirchenrechts in der frühen Aufklärung. Er gilt als der universale Geist seiner Zeit und war einer der bedeutendsten Philosophen des ausgehenden 17. und beginnenden 18. Jahrhunderts sowie einer der wichtigsten Vordenker der Aufklärung. Leibniz sagte über sich selbst: „Beim Erwachen hatte ich schon so viele Einfälle, dass der Tag nicht ausreichte, um sie niederzuschreiben.“ Im 18. Jahrhundert wird er vielfach als Freiherr bezeichnet; doch bislang fehlt eine Beurkundung über die Erhebung in den Adelsstand.

Nach dem Abitur am Elberfelder Gymnasium studierte er evangelische Theologie in Königsberg (Preußen) (1930–1932), Zürich ( und ) und Bonn (1933–1935). Anschließend absolvierte er das Vikariat im Neumünsterspital in Zürich und war nach der Ordination zunächst Pfarrer in Binningen (1936–1941). Danach war er als Pfarrer in Feuerthalen (1941–1954) und in Riehen tätig. Im Jahre promovierte er zum Dr. theol. und war ab Privatdozent an der Universität Zürich. Im Jahre folgte der Ruf an die Universität Bern als ordentlicher Professor für systematische Theologie und Dogmengeschichte. An der Universität Bern war er von bis Rektor. Der Forschungsschwerpunkt von Locher lag bei den Reformatoren, besonders bei Huldrych Zwingli, über den er promoviert hatte. So veröffentlichte er «Die Theologie Huldrych Zwinglis im Lichte seiner Christologie» in drei Teilen: «Die Gotteslehre», «Christologie und Abendmahl» und «Das christliche Leben».
